Get a Star Wars app makeover from Google – “Choose your side”

The light side is represented by Rey, a resilient survivor; while the dark side is embodied by Kylo Ren, a dark warrior strong with the Force and a fiery temper.

The first clip from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has arrived, and although it’s a scene we’ve seen before in chunks in the trailers and TV spots, we get a few actual information out of it. “So when we first heard about Episode VII, we started thinking about what a Google tribute to these epic stories might look like”.

Google’s motto may be, “Don’t be evil”, but they still let you choose the dark side of the Force with a new extension that will Star Wars-ify your internet browsing experience.

The VR experience will launch in the official Star Wars app, available on Android and iOS devices.

Bavor also promises more surprises are in store leading up to the film’s release on December 18.

It’s all part of a Disney/Google promotion, and, if you’re a Google user, it goes quite deep. The Monorail is the latest in the Star Wars hype machine for the upcoming release.

Additionally, Google will add little Star Wars touches to YouTube, Calendar, Translate, Search, and Waze. Previously unseen footage suggests that Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron will be joined in the single-seater spacecraft by pilot Jessika Pava and Nien Nunb, the alien who helped Lando Calrissian pilot the Millennium Falcon in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. For Chrome, Gmail and YouTube, changes can only be seen on a desktop, while everything else can be experienced on your phone as well.

According to a post on the Star Wars website, “Coming on December 2 is a new virtual reality experience developed along with Google and Verizon”.

Google has (belatedly) come to the party, with a new plug-in letting you “awaken the force within” – basically, to bring Star Wars into every facet of your online life.
