The Force Awakens: Google apps get Star Wars makeover

Google promises there will be updates between now and December 17, the opening night of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Some of the changes include a TIE fighter or X-wing showing your location in Google Maps and red or blue lightsabers replacing progress and volume bars in YouTube.

Even Google’s virtual assistant, “Google Now”, gets filled with “this day in Star Wars history” trivia. Chatting to CBS, he touched on his ideas for where the next Star Wars trilogy should have gone, and why he and Disney effectively parted company.

The Google experience will automatically return to its regular state by February 1, 2016. The tool adds little tweaks to most of Google’s apps, so for instance, the Gmail app gets a new background depending on which side you choose.

If you have a Google account all you need to do is go to google.com/starwars, where once you are signed in you will be given a simple choice, Light Side or Dark Side.

It’s obvious that Google’s chosen the dark side already, but we’re hoping you’ll leave us a comment to let us know which side if the Force you will choose. Yes, the Millennium Falcon will make an appearance.

Google says changes will appear on Chromecast, Waze, Search, Now and Wear as well. If you change your mind, you can switch allegiances, and the makeover will follow you as you move between devices; they’re available on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Chromebook.

According to Clay Bavor, VP of Product Management at Google, “And that’s just the beginning”.
