Hotel implosion set to make way for hockey arena
The implosion was part of Olympia Development’s ongoing construction project that will bring a new hockey arena and entertainment district to an area north of downtown.

The building has been vacant for many years but was named to the National Register of Historic Places. The adjacent Eddystone Hotel was spared demolition and will be redeveloped with the new arena complex.
The 20,000 seat arena is expected to open in September 2017.
It took about 15 seconds for the ex- Park Avenue Hotel to come crashing down Saturday morning after the first of the charges could be heard going off.

Then, the bottom of the historic Park Avenue Hotel in Detroit’s Cass Corridor started to collapse, and its 13 stories quickly fell to the ground like pouring rain amid plumes of white, brown and gray dust.

Officials said 200 pounds of dynamite were used to level the 252-room building. Preservationists say they are sad to see the building go.
