The blast occurred on Mohamed V Avenue, a main road in Tunis, the capital of the North African country, according to a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
Tunisian authorities increased the level of security in the capital following the deadly attacks in Beirut and Paris that took place earlier this month, amid fears of the increased frequency of terrorist attacks.
Tunisia has suffered two major attacks this year targeting its tourism industry. Shootings at a luxury beach hotel in Sousse last June killed 38 people, mostly tourists, while in March an attack by Islamist extremists at Tunisia’s famed Bardo museum near the capital killed 22 people. Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks.

The army has also been fighting against another armed group in the mountains near the Algerian border. Militants have hit checkpoints and patrols in rural areas in the past.
