Is it worth it to open on Thanksgiving?

Black Friday has gained popularity over the years with people frantic to do some major bargain shopping for Christmas.

“Thanksgiving weekend shopping has evolved tremendously over the past few years and can no longer be seen as the “start” of the holiday season, though there’s no question it’s still important to millions of holiday shoppers and retailers of all shapes and sizes”, said Matthew Shay, National Retail Federation president and CEO. 51% of respondents report they find out about holiday sales from their local newspapers, and 39% report they expect to see the best sales on Black Friday.

Black Friday-the one day or, as it is now, the string of days-is a make-or-break time for many retailers.

“The fortunate aspect is that it means there’s a lot of activity and buying on the site”, Jeffrey Neuburger, a partner with the law firm Proskauer and an expert on technology, media and advertising-related business transactions including data and security matters, told Retail Dive. But other stores are staying closed.

REI is taking the pushback one step further.

The backlash makes good branding sense for some companies, especially among retailers catering to wealthier shoppers or selling products in categories that don’t attract the deal hunters, analysts said. Stores like ALDO, Banana Republic, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, Hollister and PacSun will be open on Thanksgiving starting at 6 p.m. until midnight.

The 2015 Black Friday ad for Ebay was just released and there are numerous deals on your favorite items, from gift cards to electronics or apparel, Ebay is the best place to go if you are looking for the lowest prices without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Shoppers can ditch Thanksgiving celebrations as early as 3 p.m. for deals at JC Penney, 4 p.m. for Brandsmart and 6 p.m. for Walmart and Target stores. Somerset in Troy and Genesee Valley Center in Flint are skipping the holiday altogether.

Target’s Black Friday hours since 2010. Are you traveling? What kinds of meals are you going to be expected to prepare? “There’s a buzz about it”, she said.

“It is not unusual for some retailers to make last-minute changes to their plans”, Gielczyk said.

Debbie Kuykendall said that for many people it’s nice to have a store open in case they forget something. The second is that it is the day in which American retailers make themselves profitable for the year. But once competitors like Target and Kohl’s shared their midnight plans, “we made a decision at Best Buy that we need to be where our customers are”, Dunn said.

These are the stores remaining open for Thanksgiving.

At consultancy ThoughtWorks Retail, strategists think Holiday Shipstorm might best capture the status quo of this year’s shopping situation, since more shoppers will be buying online and, meanwhile, a recent survey showed that most retailers believe they are not well-prepared to provide a wide array of choices for shipping, such as same-day or after-hours delivery. “I know one thing is that we will have some Pop! figures on sale and we’ve worked out deals with publishers to get some great stuff in just for this event, but can’t reveal much more beyond that”.

While deals at most retailers start on Thanksgiving and last throughout the weekend, the big time to find travel deals is still Cyber Monday, which this year is November 30.
