Soon, you would be able to use Foodpanda’s service to order meals from your favourite restaurant while waiting to board a long-distance train.

Food ordering portal Foodpanda has tied up with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for order and delivery of food to the passengers.

The association will enable consumers to order meals of their choice through Foodpanda’s aggregator model and allow them to order from a variety of cuisine options.

The collaboration, to be launched at New Delhi railway station next month, will provide customers with the choice to order meals at least two hours before the travel, said IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director A K Manocha. IRCTC is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles catering, tourism and online ticketing operations.

A pilot of the suggested association will be gone for the New Delhi Railway station, Foodpanda said in a statement, without revealing the timeline.

Foodpanda will align the shipment of food with the train arrival time at the picked station, fulfilling the deal through its own delivery arm.

Personally speaking, I am quite willing to bet upon significant improvements in terms of both quality and services – depending upon the leash FoodPanda is provided – within the Indian Railways catering service, which as of now is plagued by a multitude of issues, again underlining the importance of inviting more and more private sector companies into the fold of public enterprises.

Saurabh Kochhar, CEO, Foodpanda said, “Our association with IRCTC will be an offering which addresses a huge consumer need prevailing for years”. It had, just about a week ago, partnered with another startup Hello Curry, to provide commuters with food delivery options in a few of the major metropolitan railway stations.

Consumers will have the option of prepaid or cash on delivery. The tie-up will be later extended to cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Chennai.
