“Small Business Saturday is just an opportunity to refocus the community on the fact that downtown is exclusively locally owned business”, said Kyle Carter, executive director of the Downtown Davenport Partnership.
“We get online orders from places as far as Texas and Oklahoma, and we also have a lot of local people who buy online and pick up their orders in the store”, Haiges said.
As the Small Business Saturday idea continues to mature, more shoppers and businesses are joining the bandwagon.
We’re entering the busiest time of year for retailers, with Black Friday kicking off the holiday shopping season this week. Now in its sixth year, Small Business Saturday has been embraced as part of the holiday shopping tradition as each year shoppers, businesses and public officials come together to Shop Small® and show their neighborhood pride.
“When you shop at a local business, it allows them to employ more people and these people spend money in the community”, he said.
“We just want people to get excited about biking”, he said. Last year, 88 million people shopped during the nationwide event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. “I have become very attached to the owners of a few local businesses”, Roberts said. “We expect consumers will tackle their holiday shopping lists with a healthy dose of optimism, tempered by a hint of caution as they look for ways to find the flawless, practical gift”.
Since 2010, American Express has joined the nations small, independent businesses to make a statement on the importance of supporting the local businesses that in turn support the local economy.
Locally owned small businesses in any market are more than the bricks that form an economic foundation.
Small Business Saturday is a way to help the stores that give back to the community.
While the bulk of that shopping is expected to occur on Black Friday at national chain and big-box stores that boast uber-cheap deals for shoppers willing to battle a crowd, small businesses are trying to eke out a piece of the post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping pie. Locally, Wilmington Downtown Inc. has been selected as a champion partner for the shopping event. “We’re excited and we want to spread that feeling to our customers”. “And not only that, it helps support our local commerce, our local businesses”.
