Soon thereafter, law enforcement providing security for Mirror Lake began clearing OSU students out of the area that had been fenced off for the jump.
We are saddened to inform the community that on Wednesday morning, at approximately 12:20 a.m., an unidentified male was removed from Mirror Lake for a medical emergency.
A Buckeye tradition turned into a medical emergency as a man was pulled from Mirror Lake early Wednesday.
University staffers do not yet know who the man is or whether he was a student.
OSUs director of public safety said that the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. At that time, the university was still unable to tell who he was. OSU Police asked for help identifying him to contact his loved ones; any information should be directed to 614-292-2121. He had tattoos on the upper left part of his chest and on his right arm.
The Columbus Dispatch reports officials declined to say whether the university will ban the event in the future.
Now the university urges students via Twitter to not jump into the lake’s cold waters.
