Carly Simon says part of You’re So Vain is about Warren Beatty

According to CBS News on November 18, “You’re so Vain” was released back in 1972 and from that day forward one of the most mysterious musical questions was all about who was the subject of “You’re so Vain?”.

The 70-year-old legendary singer revealed that part of the song is about Reds star Warren Beatty, 78!

Asked if she will ever provide fans with answers to the remaining mystery, she adds, “I don’t think so, at least until they know it’s about them”. It’s actually about three different men, she says, and she’s not planning on naming the other two subjects “until they know it’s about them”. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for “You’re So Vain” in 2004, and awarded the ASCAP Founders Award in 2012. For those of you who guessed Warren Beatty, you were right, or only partially correct.

She admitted to the magazine that she was intrigued by the continued interest in the men behind the song. This list includes Mick Jagger, Kris Kristofferson and Jack Nickolson.

Although she told her older sisters at the time, they didn’t believe her until she showed them the book. For a long time, the only clue Simon gave was that whoever he was, he probably thought the song was about him. They thought she was just trying to be a big girl, she said. But she’s finally talking about the inspiration behind the track.

“It was heinous”, she says.

“Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!” The mystery lasted more than 40 years.

Carly is know in a relationship with surgeon Richard Koehler.

She’s releasing a compilation CD, Songs from the Trees, to accompany her memoir, featuring two new songs, one of which, I Can’t Thank You Enough, she co-wrote with her son. “I wanted to get my life story down for my children”, she says.
