Gonzalez hits 3 doubles, Rockies top Braves 5

High winds pick up the tarp as members of the grounds crew try to pull it over the diamond as heavy rain quickly descends on Coors Field and forces a delay in the first inning of a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in Denver.

Even so, nothing went as planned. Left-hander Jorge De la Rosa (6-3, 4.46 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday, but could pitch Friday on four days rest.

Both starters didn’t last past the first inning after a long rain delay.

In the bottom of the second, the Rockies got two more runs, when Drew Stubbs hit a solo home run, and then Troy Tulowitzki later drove in a runner on a sacrifice fly, giving the Rockies a 4-0 lead after two full innings.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss, second from left, and catcher… “That really threw a wrench the plans”. Carlos Gonzalez had three of the Rockies’ six doubles.

“I was pretty surprised that they wanted us to start that game, but that’s the way it goes”, Wood said. Colorado got one back on Nick Hundley’s RBI double in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-3.

The Colorado Rockies mashed 16 hits, and despite two rain delays during the game, held out for a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night at Coors Field in Denver. The loss dropped Atlanta to 42-44 this season.

The Rockies had to wait 2 hours, 7 minutes for the rain to end before they could start their game at Coors Field on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Thursday’s delay was a minute shorter but more damaging because neither starter could return.

Two pitches into his 17th start of the season, Alex Wood’s outing was washed away. “It’s nearly the All-Star break and it’s still raining and 60 degrees”.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez watches during the first inning of the Braves’ baseball game against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in Denver. “I did all my homework and today was just going over everything. And I look forward to taking the ball on Sunday”.

Brigham did help the Braves save their bullpen, but he was not all that effective in his four innings of work, allowing four runs, all earned, on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Hale (3-4) singled in the second and tweaked his groin scoring on Tulowitzki’s sacrifice fly.

Hale took the mound in the second but wasn’t able to finish the inning due to the groin strain. “It just feels tight and bruised”.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez watches during the first… Mike Foltynewicz gave back one of those runs, allowing three straight hits to open the home half of the fifth.

Colorado Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez, front right, is… The past two years I haven’t played a lot of baseball.

The Braves cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth.

Atlanta Braves second baseman Jace Peterson runs for the dugout… Troy Tulowitzki singled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games – longest in the majors this season. He also reached base in a 36th consecutive game. Kyle Kendrick didn’t come back out, either. Atlanta C A.J. Pierzynski, who went 10-for-13 with three doubles and a triple in his previous three games, went 0-for-4. Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado batted second for the first time since the opener of a May 23 doubleheader and for the fourth time this season.
