The Red Devils are now leading Group B with seven points in four games, a Wednesday win will punch them a ticket to the next round of the Champions League.

“We could have finished this game in the first half”, Van Gaal told BT Sport after the final whistle. In the first half he played a very good game, but we didn’t play so well.

“We are not ruthless enough – we have to score more goals as a team”, United captain Wayne Rooney said.

The home side looked livelier early in the second half, with the realisation of how important a win would be going into the final group match.

“The first half they weren’t bad, they had spells there and created some chances but in the second half they just seemed to run out of ideas and looked like they ran out of energy at the end”.

“Now our efforts in away games is much better than previous year so we have to do it in Wolfsburg”. I am happy with the result.

This was supposed to be the Group of Deffo as far as Manchester United were concerned.

Rooney said United must be more clinical and can not keep claiming they are a work in progress under Van Gaal.

On a day when Old Trafford paid tribute to the late George Best on the 10th anniversary of the great winger’s death, how United fans wished they had a player to produce similar wizardry or excitement in the current team. I think we created our chances there, we didn’t finish them. “I thought we were unlucky not to go into the break 1-0 up”, he said.

“I cannot answer because you have to be very cautious with an injury like that”, he added of Shaw’s expected recovery time.

Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have returned to training ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League match against PSV.

“We didn’t play so well”. It will be interesting to see whether Marcos Rojo will start the game or not considering his error lead to a crucial penalty in the last minutes of the game against Watford.

Despite some disquiet from the club’s supporters regarding their style of football, it can not be disputed that it has been an excellent couple of weeks or so for United, beginning with victory in their last European match at home to CSKA Moscow.
