Canary played the twins for 26 years and racked up five Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor along with 16 more nominations.
The five-time emmy victor began his acting career in theatre, before making the switch to television in the 1960’s.
However, he did make a brief return to the soap in 2011 in the run up to the show’s emotional finale.
According to his Wilton Bulletin obituary, Canary was a football player, earning a scholarship to play at the University of Cincinnati after growing up in Massillon, Ohio. His early career included movie work on Hombre (1967) and The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967).
The actor was at first reluctant to take a role on a daytime soap opera. Canary was also nominated eleven times for his roles on TV soaps and his most recent nomination was in 2008, under the “Best Lead Actor” category. Before “All My Children”, Canary was on the set of another soap opera by the name of “Another World” for two years.
Kelly, who played Hayley Vaughan for over 12 years, was one of a number of stars, including Sarah Michelle Geller and Andy Cohen who also expressed their grief. During the 2005 Daytime Emmys, Canary famously poked fun at himself, appearing on stage with another daytime TV regular, Sesame Street’s Oscar the Grouch. He later appeared in a two-part Gunsmoke episode called Nitro, by David Dortort, Bonanza producer, who tapped him to play the role of Candy Canaday, ranch foreman of the Ponderosa, on the iconic western series.
Canary left behind his wife Maureen, and two children Christopher and Kathryn. An incredibly talented actor. “A wonderful man. I was lucky to know you”, she posted.
