Lynch has surgery for sports hernia

Coach Pete Carroll said Lynch had surgery Wednesday to fix an unspecified abdominal issue related to a sports hernia.

Lynch consulted with Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia and the surgery was the final option to correct an abdominal injury that had bothered Lynch for weeks. “There was nothing more serious in that the doctor projected (Lynch) could get back pretty quickly”, Carroll added. “The doctor was very optimistic about a quick recovery, and that could mean within three or four weeks, or something like that”.

Carroll remains positive that even if there really is a chance for Marshawn to miss this season, he’s still on the positive side that it won’t happen.

But Carroll said the doctors “fixed everything that was wrong and the doctor was very optimistic about his return”.

Seattle is hopeful that Lynch will return at some point and will keep the bruising running back on the active roster.

Last week, Rawls rushed for 209 yards and had two total touchdowns in the victory over San Francisco.

And the job of being Seattle’s primary ball carrier could be Rawls’ going forward because of uncertainty about the health of Lynch.

In a span of five years, Lynch only missed one game due to injury.

Cornerback Richard Sherman said, he’s in touch with Lynch. There may be a time when we talk about an opportunity, you know he could’ve taken off and not been the heat-seeking missile kind of thing, but we’ll watch and see how it goes. “It happens. He obviously knows, playing this game, he’s gotten through nine years or so without having a surgery. But he’s doing fantastic”, the Stanford University alumnus said.

“I don’t know about that now”, Carroll said when asked if Lynch might be able to play Sunday. He has missed three of 10 games this season while dealing with hamstring, calf and neck issues, in addition to the sports hernia injury. “In an endoscopy, the surgeon makes smaller skin incisions and uses a small camera, called an endoscope, to see inside the abdomen”. More realistic would be a return if Seattle can make the playoffs.

“In March, Seahawks and Lynch agreed to a two-year extension contract that will give him “$12 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016 and $10 million in 2017”, NFL.com noted, citing a source knowledgeable about the matter.

So coming back within a month could be optimistic. “He’s a great receiver as a running back”, Carroll said. “We’re missing him a little bit, too, though on the other side of it”.

So far, Lynch has carried 111 times for 417 yards on this season.
