Rooney and Martial out of Man United trip to Watford

Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City all have the chance to surpass United at the top of the table when they play their respective fixtures later on Saturday. Plus, his goal against West Brom showed his prowess at finishing when he gets it right.

Players from both teams stood together in the center circle as the French national anthem was played before kickoff at Vicarage Road, in honor of the victims of the Paris attacks last week that killed 130 people.

– Deeney became the first player to score a goal and an own goal in the same Premier League match since Damien Delaney in May 2014 (Crystal Palace v Liverpool).

That lifted Chelsea up one place to 15th on 14 points, but still a long way behind the leaders.

Van Nistelrooy had set the record in the last eight matches of the 2002-03 season and the first two games of 2003-04.

Vardy has now scored 13 league goals so far this season. “Our positional game was not so good and that was disappointing”.

“We are in a lousy period with a lot of injuries”, he said.

“I only saw him the day after he played then he was at home yesterday so I think he can’t play (against Watford)'”. We tried to play and didn’t give up.

United started in a 4-2-2-2 against Watford.

It had seemed that United were going to regret their profligate finishing when Troy Deeney hauled Watford level with a penalty on 87 minutes after Marcos Rojo’s needless foul on Odion Ighalo.

United dominated proceedings in the opening ten minutes and got their opener through Memphis Depay in the 11th minute. Yes, there are plenty of poor decisions and mistakes but you’d expect that of anybody breaking into the team for the first time.

For that reason, Rooney hopes his team-mate will be back in action soon, if not in time for Saturday’s trip to Watford.

“The system was different, but we have a little bit more freedom and there was space in behind also which we took advantage of”, he said.

United manager van Gaal did not include any out and out forwards in his line-up, with Wayne Rooney absent through illness.

Ander Herrera’s clipped, bending cross reached Depay and he punished Watford’s woeful marking by cushioning a firm volley past the helpless Heurelho Gomes for his first goal since the win over Sunderland on Sept 26.
