Facebook’s Solution to Apple TV Woes

The company’s new SDK for tvOS apps lets developers lean on Facebook for the login process; users can go to facebook.com/devices on their phone or computer and enter a verification code to log in instantly. Developers will also be able to use Facebook SDK to enable users to share content from Apple TV to their Facebook account, which ultimately helps the world’s largest social network.

Facebook’s new SDK comes equipped with an analytics package to help developers track the performance of their app. This can be added right to any app using the same manner as you would on an iOS app. The tvOS SDK is roughly the same framework as its iOS counterpart, making it fairly easy to implement, but uses Apple TV’s process of forcing you have to visit a website to verify your initial session. If they choose the latter they will be given a unique 8 digit code which they will have to punch into their smartphone or tablet to authorize the app.

Ever since the new Apple TV banned the use of your iPhone as remote, entering usernames, passwords – and pretty much any text at all – has turned into quite a pain, but Facebook may have come up with a solution. Developers can also tap into Facebook’s analytics tools for tvOS apps.

The system relies on app developers building in support for Facebook logins, which isn’t going to be universal any time soon.
