Strategic partnership between India and Singapore, signed declaration

Against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore, the two Prime Ministers signed a Joint Declaration establishing a “Strategic Partnership” between India and Singapore to elevate bilateral relations to a higher level.

Earlier in the day Modi called on Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam and was accorded a ceremonial welcome on the second day of his visit to the country.

But he launched a commemorative Singapore-India stamp set comprising two stamps that depict the presidential residences of both countries.

He later left for Singapore on the second and last leg of his four-day visit to southeast Asia.

He will also deliver a special address at the India-Singapore Economic Convention hosted by Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran and interact with Singapore business leaders.

Speaking at the joint press briefing, Prime Minister Najib said a New convention Centre will be built in New Delhi under government to government contract.

Malaysia and India also want to promote joint collaborations in the infrastructure and construction sectors, and to facilitate collaboration between the private sectors of both countries. “We have taken very decisive steps to remove many of long the pending concerns”.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) of Singapore also signed an MoU on cooperation to combat illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substance and their precursors. To this end, they chose to establish a financial dialogue process between India and Singapore, as mutually agreed.

Lee said the diverse Indian community in Singapore has played a large part in building the country.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi visited Singapore on official visit from November 23, to November 24, 2015 on a bilateral visit on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsein Loong. “To this objective, we have already made a number of corrections”, the prime minister said.

“India will work with countries in the region and beyond, including the U.S. and Russian Federation, our East Asia Summit partners, to ensure that our commons – ocean, space and cyber – remain avenues of shared prosperity, not become new theatres of contests”.

Besides, Modi sought faster completion of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to create a new economic block within Asia. The Prime Minister emphasised the economic and trade relations between India and Singapore and highlighted the fact that Singapore is the 10 largest trading partner of India globally, and is the 2 largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India.

He was given a huge and resounding applause, as he began his address with a reference to the landmark contributions of “Little India” in Singapore’s development as a modern city-state.
