Manchester United draw to squander chance of place in last 16

“We could make an important step to finish first in our group in the Champions League and we could climb to the top of the Premier League”.

“You have to fight and perform well every game, like we also did at home against Manchester United”.

It was United’s fourth goalless draw in their last seven matches and their lack of firepower could well cost them dear this season.

“It’s not the way we wanted it to be before tonight’s game, but that’s the way it is and we believe we’re good enough to go out there and get the three points”.

Since Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013, it’s the United defence that has been under scrutiny, but more recently their attacking prowess has been called into question. Yet in the next game, we could score out of nothing.

United’s chances of progressing will be slim should they turn in a similar performance to Wednesday’s but Chris Smalling believes his side can still join Europe’s elite in the last 16.

Victory would have sent United through, but the only way they can now guarantee themselves a place in the last 16 is if they beat Wolfsburg away in two weeks’ time.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t win this game”, said Rooney. “We did a great job twice in our home games and we have to do it again”.

Manchester United failed to win against PSV at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Wednesday.

In the few times they earned a sight of goal, Lingard’s touch let him down in the box, Schneiderlin fluffed a chance from close range from a corner and Anthony Martial fired a shot straight at the keeper from inside the box.

Rooney admitted United lacked composure in front of goal and did not deserve to win. We have created in one half three open chances.

The Dutch side also have the advantage of a superior head-to-head record against United, who were beaten 2-1 in the Netherlands in September.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu was delighted with his side’s efforts and felt United’s confidence had drained as the contest went on. “At home we have had good results [with two wins]”, said Pröpper.
