Syria Conflict: Russia Pounds ISIS Targets

“The task of delivering Kalibr long-distance cruise missile strikes at Islamic State targets in Syria has been accomplished”, said Sergey Yekimov, a deputy commander of the Caspian Fleet.

Baghdad has asked that the airports in Erbil and Sulaimani halt all flights for 48 hours, in order to protect the safety of travelers while Russian jets are targeting the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

Rami Abdurrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human rights, said prices of fuel shot up in some ISIS-ruled areas by around 80 percent, due to truck drivers refusing to drive to Islamic State oil facilities, fearing their vehicles will be hit.

The Caspian isn’t the only sea from which Russian Federation is firing cruise missiles at Syria. At least eight people were killed in 50 air raids in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor province.

Russian Federation had initially drawn significant criticism from the worldwide community when it began its bombing campaign in Syria in September, with many suggesting the strikes were aimed at supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and not helping the Syrian people. The embattled president also said he favoured new peace talks to be hosted in Moscow, but stressed that the Syrian conflict could not be resolved without “defeating terrorism”.

Russian television showed a man scrawling “For our people!” and “For Paris!” in black pen on bombs minutes before a warplane was set to take off from the country’s airbase in Syria.

According to Shoigu, Russian warplanes flew 522 sorties and destroyed over 800 targets in the last four days. Putin says the West’s refusal to engage with Assad has been “an enormous mistake”. He expressed hope that the next phases would “produce the expected result”, but did not clarify what those phases would be.

In fact, on Tuesday, Russia announced strikes against what is said were ISIS targets in the Syria provinces of Aleppo and Idlib.

IS said its jihadists based in Sinai brought down a Russian Metrojet airliner in Egypt last month.

Russian Federation has been conducting a bombing campaign in Syria since September 30, the country’s largest foreign intervention outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.

Russian Federation have tweeted a picture of a missile which they plan to fire at Isis with “That’s for Paris” written on the side.

Meanwhile, Turkey has warned Russian Federation that it must immediately stop bombing “civilian Turkmen villages” in Syria, close to the Turkish border.
