United will now have to travel to Wolfsburg in two weeks time with only a win guaranteeing them a place in the next round.

The Red Devils fired their fifth blank of the campaign against PSV on Wednesday night in a stalemate that left their Champions League hopes in the balance.

United are a point behind the German group leaders following Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven.

“We have proved that in the Premier League and we must do it in the Champions League”.

Lingard’s chance came in the 73rd minute, after Van Gaal had sent on Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Depay, but Cocu felt that the changes had actually played into PSV’s hands. “We have to start turning these games into victories”.

“You look at Wayne’s legacy at Old Trafford, it’s absolutely fantastic, his goals record is brilliant”.

“We have created in one half three open chances but they were hard chances”.

Progress into the next round not only brings them prize money but also helps the team’s UEFA coefficients, something to help them avoid some of the bigger teams by improving their UEFA rankings.

“Going out to Germany is always tough, but we have to believe in ourselves and have the confidence in ourselves to do that”.

Best, who wore the No. 7 jersey, was one of British football’s greatest players, and some of his wizardry and excitement was what United sorely missed on a night the team harried PSV and dominated possession, but lacked a cutting edge.

“The result is disappointing because I feel we could have finished this game several times”, Van Gaal said. “We were good in the first half, and could have been ahead, but showed a lack of composure in the second”.

“We have won also our home match against Wolfsburg so why we can’t win in Wolfsburg?”

Former United midfielder – and Van Gaal’s nemesis – Paul Scholes said: “You look at these teams across Europe, your Bayern Munichs, your Barcelonas, it’s the players up front who make the difference”. “I was happy with the performance at Old Trafford but we are not there yet”.

United's inability to capitalise on their chances may prove costly after they were forced to settle for a draw with PSV
