Two Arrested in Connection to Shooting at Jamar Clark Protests

Because of an extension granted by a Hennepin County judge, possible charges against the four men could arrive as late as Monday; they will remain in the Hennepin County jail until then. One man has been released – a 32-year-old Hispanic man who was arrested in South Minneapolis – after police determined he wasn’t in the area of the shooting incident. The suspects are Nathan Gustavsson, 21, of Hermantown; Daniel Macey, 26, of Pine City, Allen Scarsella, 23, and a 17-year-old.

Jie Wronski-Riley said the shooting occurred as angry protesters moved the men away from the encampment at the police station.

She said the meal is being hosted by the NACCP and Zion Baptist Church and created to promote healing after the shooting death of 24-year-old Jamar Clark.

Among those at the funeral were U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Democrat who represents the Minneapolis area. We appreciate Black Lives Matter for holding it down and keeping the protests peaceful.

The four men have not yet been formally charged, but the Star Tribune said they are considering the case be handled as a hate crime.

The funeral procession for a black man who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police has gone past the police station where activists protesting his death have been camped out for days. He was one of the five protesters shot Monday night. According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension – the state agency investigating the shooting – they have both been with the Minneapolis police for a little more than a year, and both have been officers for seven years.

Clark was shot by police at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 outside of an apartment on the 1600 block of Plymouth Avenue N. Officers were responding to a request for assistance from paramedics who reported that Jamar Clark was disrupting their ability to aid an assault victim. To a standing ovation, Howell said: “Jamar, your life did and does have goal”.

“At some point during an altercation that ensued between the officers and the individual, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual”, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said in a statement. An officer opened fire on Clark after a struggle broke out between them, according to the Associated Press. The officers involved are on leave. Two investigations – one by the state and one by federal authorities – are underway.

Steven Belton, interim president of the Minneapolis Urban League, echoed those sentiments on Wednesday, saying protesters had achieved most of what they wanted, including the federal investigation and the names of the officers involved. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has asked that the videos be released as soon as authorities think it would not affect their investigation.

Minneapolis police have not yet released the identities of the suspects.

In a video message posted on Facebook, Hodges said she “abhors” Monday night’s violence and that “those attacks have no place in our city”.

“We no longer are asking for homemade donations”, the group indicated, “but rather gift cards to Cub Foods or cash donations”.

“We are locked and loaded”, SaigaMarine said, who later said “stay white” before ending the video.

The event also afforded protesters a chance to relax after more than a week of tumult and camping out in cold weather. The forecast is for a Thanksgiving Day snow in Minneapolis.
