Euric Cain is wanted for attempted murder.

“We know who you are and you need to know that we are going to find you”, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a message to Cane during a news conference Sunday. Gold repeatedly told the assailant he had no money on him and the suspect became enraged, stealing the woman’s purse and speeding away, investigators said.

Gold was shot at about 4 a.m. Friday in the 1000 block of St. Mary Street. Cain then shot Gold in the stomach, and tried to shoot him again, but his gun jammed.

New Orleans police said Euric Cain, 21, gave a full confession to shooting Peter Gold, 25, of Longwood, who was trying to help a woman under attack by the suspect.

The woman was treated for minor injuries and released.

Cain was arrested earlier this month for possession of a stolen cellphone during a carjacking, police said. He pleaded guilty in July 2012 to illegal carrying of a weapon and in May 2014 to stealing a motor vehicle.

Cain had recently been released from prison on the motor vehicle theft charges, according to WWL-TV.

Gold, who was driving by, saw it, too. His parents and sister attended Tulane.

The Advocate reported that Gold also was an undergraduate at Tulane majoring in sociology and was active in the university’s Hillel.

“Doesn’t surprise me that he would have pulled over his auto and attempted to save somebody”, Ryan O’Halloran, one of his classmate’s at Tulane, told ABC News. “Selfless” is what comes to mind”.

“I ask that you keep Peter and his family in your thoughts and prayers”, Mr Fitts said.

Gold’s cousin Bryan Baker lives in Jacksonville Beach and couldn’t believe waking up to the national news that his cousin had been shot – trying to be a good Samaritan.

Tulane University is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest, according to a university statement.

“We are indebted to the New Orleans Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service for apprehending the suspect in this case, which has deeply affected the entire Tulane community”, Tulane University President Mike Fitts said in a statement. Officials also found two women inside the home where Cain was hiding, including his girlfriend Victoria Washington. Police urged the public to help identify the shooter, who police said should be considered armed and risky.
