Facebook hands some news feed controls back to users

Users can access a list of the top people and Pages they’ve seen in their News Feed over the past week, and will be able to unfollow them with simple tap.

Unlike Twitter which has traditionally published posts chronologically in an endless stream based on when your “friends” tweet, Facebook uses algorithms to determine what content appears where, and when, in your News Feed.

The first setting was inserted after users repeatedly complained that their News Feed pages are flooded by irrelevant pieces of information, which prevents them from seeing what they are really interested in.

This new feature will be available today on iOS and is expected to roll out on Android and desktops “over the coming weeks”, Facebook said. So if you want to see the latest updates from your best friend, your spouse, and your worst frenemy before you move on to your lesser acquaintances, that’s you’re prerogative.

Facebook has announced an update for its News Feed that will bring News Feed Preferences to provide you a more personalised experience. End-users can scroll down to see the rest of their News Feed normally. The social network is now asking its users what they want to see when they open the Facebook app. For example, setting a few blogs and newspapers as See First will basically turn the top of your feed into a news reader. And the News Feed is the central hub of the Facebook referral service, a hub that is increasingly becoming the way Americans get information. He added that this is the main reason why Facebook wants to give users more control on what they see. Equally, you can re-follow friends or pages you may have unfollowed earlier.

You also have the option of unfollowing people and Pages to hide their posts without unfriending or unliking them completely.

Find new Pages to connect to: This feature suggests more Pages, perhaps from another media house or gadget company, based on the pages you have already liked.

The revised interface offers clear control over who to un-follow should they wish to banish the content from selected friends from the News Feed.
