State to crack down on unsafe driving for Thanksgiving holiday

Wheetley said the reason they have chosen those two interstates is because during their counting period and throughout the year, those are the two most unsafe interstates that they have in Missouri as far as the number of traffic crashes and fatalities that occur.

Highway patrolmen and state troopers across the country are setting up extra patrols to help keep motorists safe while driving.

During the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday counting period, eight fatal traffic crashes claimed eight lives.

40/29 News spoke to people who were driving along Interstate 40.

The law is explicit: Driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of.08% or more is illegal, but even with a lower BAC a driver may be a hazard and taken to jail. Whether you are going by auto, plane or train, there are a few things you need to be aware of before you hit the road.

Sgt. Charlene Cotton of the Sampson County office of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is stressing the importance of taking steps to be protected from danger or injury. Highway Patrol officials tell News 25 they will be setting up multiple checkpoints throughout the weekend, so think twice before getting behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.

The State Police effort will include fixed sobriety checkpoints, an underage drinker initiative and the “Operation Hang Up” initiative, which targets drivers talking or texting on handheld devices. This is done with the goal, as Colonel Kriste Kibbey Etue of the MSP says, to make it so everyone can live to eat the leftovers.

Nevada Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement of seat belt use, DUI, distracted driving, speed and pedestrian safety.

Last year, more than 1,100 people were stopped for speeding, 300 for seat belt violations and 3,500 for a host of other moving violations, state police said.

On the busiest travel day of the year, most drivers said they were glad to see more police patrolling. “I do not want another Oklahoma family to feel that heartbreak”.

“Safer is better if they’re out watching over the roads”.
