“They are at the mercy of the insurgents. Similar situation prevails along the India-Bhutan border”, he added.

“We should not ignore the people on the border“.

“I have constituted a committee headed by Joint Intelligence Committee chairman R.N. Ravi to review how to effectively manage the India-Myanmar border”.

The committee is likely to submit its report within the next few days and the government would take action as per its recommendations, he said.

He furthered asked Arunachal, Nagaland and Manipur CMs to strengthen police stations in the border areas to secure villagers and improve connectivity.

Rajnath Singh also appealed to the chief ministers to provide land for border fencing. “Some of the disputes are now sub-judice and status quo has to be maintained in respect of these”, the Home Minister said. As such, a sustained drive will be launched against illegal weapons with the support of all the state governments. “The focus will be on the Myanmar border”, Singh told the chief ministers.

Rajnath Singh urged to the Chief Ministers of the region to have a realistic audit of deployment of Central Armed Police Forces in their states. “Time has come when apart from insurgency-centric security, we must think, plan and deliver on people-centric security in Northeast Region”, he said. “There is a strong popular desire for peace in Nagaland and Manipur too”, Singh said.

Referring to the ongoing peace talks with different groups, Singh said it was on the right track and the government hoped to bring them to logical conclusions soon.

He, however, noted that there has been a marked increase in low-visibility yet high-impact violent crimes like kidnapping for ransom and extortions in Assam and Meghalaya.

“I also request the central government to persuade the outfit to rebuild the ceasefire from their end”, he said. Such criminal activities must be dealt with firmly… “They are welcome to mainstream”, said he.

“The state police must pay greater attention to registration and investigation of crimes”. Singh added, “While the home ministry…”

“We know that the North-east region is full of illegal firearms”. Assam is the worst sufferer of human casualties in terror attacks among all Indian states.

The official said that during the peak of insurgency, deployment kept on increasing and even state forces grew in strength.

Talking about the development of the region, Gogoi said that the growth of the region will be expedited if the Centre restores Special Category Status for the North Eastern states.
