Chicago officer charged with murder in killing of teen
Van Dyke was being held separate from the general inmate population at his request, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson and others have called for a “massive” march on Black Friday along Michigan Avenue.
Racial tensions soared in Chicago on Tuesday as officials released a graphic video of a police officer shooting a black teen 16 times, shortly after he was charged for the death.
“Shoot me sixteen times, shoot me sixteen times officer, do it, I dare you”, a protester said.
A total of nine people have been arrested during two days of marches and rallies around the city. Authorities took more than a year to charge him, and to make the video public.
Chicago police have said they will not tolerate criminal behavior during the protests. One of the videos shows McDonald running as a police vehicle follows. The police department had argued that releasing the video would taint multiple investigations.
Other people arrested were Dean Vanriper, 38, on three separate counts including felony possession of a controlled substance and two misdemeanor counts for unlawful use of a taser and a knife; and 25-year-old Johnae Strong, 26-year-old May Page and 24-year-old Troy Alim all on isolated accounts of resisting a police officer.
“Indict, convict, send the killer cops to jail”, people shouted as they marched about half a mile to the Chicago Police Department.
Chicago released the first footage of the shooting Tuesday.. Some also are demanding the resignation of Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, accusing them of mishandling the case, according to statements. Van Dyke was charged this week with first-degree murder.
Alvarez, a Democrat who is expected to face a tough re-election fight next year, has defended the timing of the charges, saying she made a decision to charge the officer weeks ago but moved up the public announcement because of the imminent release of the videotape.
Emanuel, though, didn’t defend Van Dyke, who is white.
A number of police killings of black men over the past year have given rise to the nationwide “Black Lives Matter” movement, pushing the issue to prominence in the midst of the 2016 presidential campaign.
Months after the teen’s death Chicago’s city council approved a $5 million settlement with McDonald’s family on the condition that the dashcam video, which family lawyers obtained, would not be released.
The video released Tuesday shows McDonald jogging down a street and then veering away from Van Dyke and another officer who emerge from a police SUV drawing their guns. He said this was one officer who violated “the highest professional standards” that thousands of Chicago police live up to every day.
The NAACP said that McDonald’s family and the community deserve action. Five other police officers at the scene did not fire a shot.

At this point in the video, the vehicle emergency lights had been turned off. That should also have switched off the dashcam, but for some reason, Van Dyke’s dashcam continued recording, allowing video to be seen of his police auto pulling up to the scene where McDonald is walking down the street. Another perspective from a different squad auto less than a minute later shows McDonald on the ground after he had been shot 16 times.
