A 17-year-old charged with grievous bodily harm over the same assault will also appear before the court today.

The victim has awoken from his coma and is in a stable condition, a Gold Coast University Hospital spokeswoman said.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman told The Huffington Post Australia the 17-year-old boy sustained serious head injuries after an alleged assault about 12.15am Friday morning.

On Friday, Queensland police advised a “group of schoolies” was involved in an argument which quickly turned violent. Sky News reported the victim was conscious when police arrived at the scene but did not want to press charges.

A fight that left a Gold Coast schoolie in hospital began with an argument over religion, a court has heard.

Both accused men have been granted bail and will return to court on January 5.

Eleven boys were arrested on 13 charges, including assault, public nuisance and street offences.

In relation to non-schoolies overnight police arrested 9 people on 12 charges mainly for public nuisance, street and drug offences with seven non-schoolies receiving liquor infringement notices.
