Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven

Van Gaal has now come out to reveal that he is getting anxious about his team’s lack of composure as they come away with yet another goalless draw.

Midfielder Juan Mata hailed George Best “a genius forever” as an injury-hit Manchester United aim to mark the 10th anniversary of the Northern Irishman’s death with a Champions League victory against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Manchester United failed to break down a stubborn PSV Eindhoven in a 0-0 draw in the Champions League on Wednesday, missing the chance to qualify from Group B with a game to spare.

Wolfsburg are unbeaten in 29 home games in the Bundesliga, but United defeated them 2-1 at Old Trafford in September and Van Gaal believes that his side are more effective on the road. “We believe we’re good enough to go out there and get the three points”. The second half wasn’t great but in the first half we should have gone ahead, so overall a draw is a fair result.

United’s best chance fell to Jesse Lingard, who was called up to England’s squad earlier this month for their friendly against France, but the 21-year-old blazed Ashley Young’s cross over the bar with 17 minutes remaining.

Despite the lack of goals, both teams played some fine football in patches with United going close to scoring three times in the first half although they lacked sharpness in front of goal. Wolfsburg haven’t lost at home and are on nine points while United and PSV are a point and two points behind respectively.

“It’s disappointing we did not play to our full potential”.

Rooney said United must be more clinical and can not keep claiming they are a work in progress under Van Gaal.

Van Gaal admitted he feels frustrated with the result and the performance.

“United was searching for a way to attack us”.

Van Gaal added: “We could have finished in the first half but also in the second half. That’s more hard, it [would have been] much more easier to do it tonight”, he said.

He faded into obscurity in the second half, along with the majority of the United side.

“We’ve only got ourselves to blame, but we can do it in Wolfsburg”.

‘But I’ve spoken to one player at United who told me he’s half the player he can be here at the moment because of the way they are playing. They have yet to lose at the Volkswagon Arena this season and did not lose there at all last season.
