Ghanem said the move would signal to Palestinian citizens that the “door is closed to them when it comes to participating in the democratic process”.

A day before the mayhem in Paris, Obama said that US forces had “contained” the Islamic State group – though its recent downing of a Russian plane over the Sinai and suicide bombings in Beirut made his assessment seem oddly optimistic.

After the security cabinet declared the movement illegal in a meeting late Monday night, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon signed an edict banning any activity connected to the group.

As part of the thoughtful, hopeful, and principled Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and out of respect for Palestinian self-determination, we affirm that “Brand Israel” is not welcome in NY and we commit to upholding the cultural boycott however we can.

Salah denounced the ban, saying his movement would continue to defend Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City from what he termed Israeli threats.

But Palestinian leaders have accused Israel of exploiting the violence in Paris and elsewhere to carry out crimes against the Palestinians, the Middle East Monitor reported.

Israel denies it is trying to change arrangements in place since it gained control of the site in 1967, under which only Muslim religious prayers are permitted there, while non-Muslims are allowed to visit.

Israel says the wave of violence is the result of incitement from Palestinian leaders.

Salah said: “I will take every possible legitimate step, in Israel and internationally, to remove the measures taken against the movement”.

The Islamic Movement of Israel provides religious and educational services for Israeli Arabs.

The northern branch of the Islamic Movement is led by Sheikh Raed Salah, who has been convicted in court of numerous subversive activities, including funding Hamas, contacting an Iranian agent, assaulting a police officer, and leading a violent protest.

The organisation runs kindergartens, health clinics, mosques, a newspaper and a sports league.

The government announced early on Tuesday that the security cabinet had approved the measure, which had been widely expected. Indyk explained. “It means to have a few generosity to the other side, even though they are the most hard of partners to have”.

Perhaps the most problematic issue in regard to the relationship between the Movement and the Israeli state is its continuing relationship with Hamas.

Addressing the recent wave of terrorist attacks plaguing Israel, Shapiro said that there is no acceptable excuse or justification for terrorism. “These organizations are secretly and actively cooperating with one another”.

“The time has come for us to use all the tools at the country’s disposal in the war on terror and against the inciters who cause it”, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said in a statement. The two movements share an extremist ideology and a common goal – the destruction of the State of Israel.

Head of the Joint Arab List Ayman Odeh asserted the banning was politically motivated and strategically timed after the Paris attacks on Friday to suggest a link between the Israel-based group and ISIS.

His movement has also been accused of financing two Muslim groups, which act as self-appointed sentinels at Al-Aqsa, keeping an eye on Jewish visitors and harassing those they suspect of secretly praying.

In response, the Islamic Movement has funded so-called female Murabitat and male Murabitun groups to watch over Jewish visitors and ensure they do not pray.

In a statement, the head of the High Arab Follow-up Committee in Israel Mohamed Baraka condemned the ban on the Islamic Movement.

The timing of Netanyahu’s announcement takes advantage of the growing climate against Islamic political activism at the local, regional and global levels.

The United States was quick to offer support for Europe’s position.
