Fawlty Towers hotel is getting demolished
As the creative genius behind Fawlty Towers and one of the leading lights in Monty Python, John Cleese is regarded as one of the finest comedians ever to work at the BBC.

Torbay Council has given the green light for the demolition of a hotel that was the inspiration for John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers comedy series.
The Gleneagles was closed for the last time earlier this year, with its Tripadvisor page now featuring an impressive 27 one-star reviews.
The council has allowed an application to change the usage designation of the Gleneagles Hotel site in Torquay from holiday accommodation to residential.

Torbay Council’s Development Management Committee has now approved a retirement living scheme for the property.
Churchill Retirement Living will knock down the three-star hotel and build 21 one-bed and 11 two-bedroom apartments, with a guest suite and two communal lounges.
“Fawlty Towers is to be demolished and turned into retirement flats”.
Andrew Sachs’s character, well-meaning but dim waiter Manuel, suffered verbal assaults from Basil on a regular basis.
However, its spiritual home is to be demolished months after closing – and to be replaced with 36 retirement apartments.

“We know how much the site means to people, and once construction starts we’ll be sure to produce something that Basil would be proud of”.
