The musicians said they will not let the terrorists silence them or keep them from playing the music they love.
“I see the pops go off, the lights flashing. then just to have to make the decision whether to run across the stage or go in a room”, McJunkins said. I’m gonna go back there and live’.
In an interview with VICE, Eagles of Death Metal opened up about the tragic events of the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.
The band’s drummer, Julian Dorio, said that the moment he laid his eyes upon the two gunmen as “the most awful” thing he had ever seen.
The band were back in LA shortly after gunmen opened fire on their crowd at the Bataclan concert hall killing 89 and injuring many more, and it was here they sat down with Vice’s cofounder/CEO Shane Smith in a world-first interview.
The attackers shot for 15 minutes before taking hostages and then detonating suicide vests during a police siege. Later Homme and Hughes emotionally discuss the loss of Eagles of Death Metal merchandise manager Nick Alexander as well as their feelings of gratitude toward fans, efforts to support victims and plans to eventually return to site of the massacre. “He stayed quiet and never called for help until he bled out because he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt”, Hughes sobbed.
Jesse Hughes told the Vice magazine that he ran off stage after the gunfire erupted and went looking for his girlfriend in a dressing room. “So many people threw themselves in front of other people”. “If you’re a country artist, if you’re death metal, if you’re a DJ, it doesn’t matter, cover that song and we’ll donate the publishing (royalties)”, he told Vice.
Bassist Matt McJunkins said he found himself trapped in a room with some fans who were also trying to get out.
Sound engineer Shawn London said one of the attackers tried to shoot him, but missed.
London said: “He looked right at me”.
The Bataclan’s management has vowed to reopen the venue at some point, though a date has not yet been fixed.
“It took a second to believe that that’s really occurring, because it wasn’t on the news yet”, Homme said.

Hughes and Homme agreed that the band must finish the tour.
