Earlier this week, authorities published two photos of a man and a woman suspected to be involved in planning the siege. It was primarily responsible for the Northern Malian conflict of 2012 and 2013.

“The destination is a risky place for foreigners to visit because of the rebels from the north, the same ones that attack the hotel last week”.

The police found a suitcase with grenades in the hotel lobby and were following up “several leads” linked to “objects” left by the gunmen, a Malian police source told AFP.

One of the suspects have been in contact with one of the gunmen since August, while the other sent telephone credit to an attacker.

In a statement posted on the company’s website, Neumann said he had met with the families of the three employees who were killed and offered “immediate emergency support”.

The country declared a state of emergency after the attacks and security remains high at the major hotels, public buildings and banks.

While Mali has certainly had its own problem with terrorists operating in its northern region, the attack raised the question of possible coordinated strikes on allies of the west which present softer targets because of less extensive security and surveillance abilities.

“I feel a deep pain”, said Tenin Diallo, the aunt of slain 30-year-old Hawa Maiga who began working at the hotel last year.
