Coli Outbreak Linked to Celery

The recall coincides with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s announcement of a recall of celery products by Taylor Farms Inc. of Tracy because they may contain E. coli 0157:H7.

Health officials reported that they have identified the source of an E.Coli outbreak in Costco stores in Washington State. However, according to Wilson, this supplier must undergo one additional test to confirm its vegetables are connected to the E coli outbreak.

If you’ve got chicken salad from Costco in your refrigerator, look at the label. Now, it is found that the multi-state outbreak is the result of a celery-and-onion in the chicken salad. That recall shows that even fully cooked chicken is vulnerable to bacteria, if workers inadvertently contaminate the cooked birds with juice from raw chickens, Marler said.

That strain was determined to be E. coli 026.

“We’re pretty confident the path that everyone seems to be on is correct”, he said. Five people were hospitalized, two developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, and most of the reported illnesses came from the western United States, said the CDC.

“I think we’re going to learn something important from both ultimately”, he said.

Some of the symptoms of E.coli include nausea, abdominal pain, cramps, fatigue and fever. The incubation period is three to seven days from the time of exposure. Anyone who develops gastrointestinal symptoms should see their health care provider.
