Authorities in Mali have arrested two individuals who are suspected of being involved in Thursday’s deadly attack.
The men, both Malian, were arrested in the capital, though officials did not specify their relationship to the assault or the al Qaeda-affiliated extremist group that claimed responsibility. The two suspects were brought in for interrogation after credible information was found in one of the assailants’ mobile phone, a source close to the investigation said. As per the phone records, it has been found that one of the individuals has been in regular contact with one of the gunmen who initiated the attack since August this year.
The attackers did not say a word to anyone as they opened fire, employee Tamba Couye said.
The US embassy in Bamako has warned of possible “further terrorist activity” in the city.
Christophe Monbelli-Valloir, deputy police commissioner for MINUSMA, said on Thursday a team from the FBI had arrived to help the Malian-led investigation. French troops have remained in the West African country since, on a mission to stabilize the region.
