“I just tried to be aggressive and have a good approach to the hitters”, Despaigne said through a translator.

Jason Heyward hit a ball too hard for Gyorko to handle cleanly for a single in the sixth.

Lynn had two hits, only one fewer than he gave up in 7.0 innings on the mound.

Craig Kimbrel, another member of the top 10, came on to shut the door for the Padres finishing the ninth with a double play as Jhonny Peralta’s single failed to materialize into anything more than another frustration.

ST. LOUIS – With a 2-1 loss San Diego, the Cardinals have lost four games in a row for the first time since late last August.

“We have to be able to come in and win games like this”. He did it in Lance Lynn style, throwing lots of fastballs and locating them in just the right spots.

“We couldn’t really put anything together off of him”, San Diego second baseman Jedd Gyorko said. “Plus he commanded. He’s a fastball guy and he worked off of that. He was mixing his sinker enough to keep us off balance”.

Lynn recorded his first 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.

The Cardinals wasted a chance with runners at the corners in the eighth, and the Padres did the same in the ninth when Trevor Rosenthal fanned Melvin Upton Jr.to end the inning.

St. Louis starter Michael Wacha, in his first career appearance against the Padres, gave up one run and five hits in seven innings.

NOTE: Cardinals reliever, rookie Mitch Harris, has been recalled to St. Louis to help relieve some pressure that has, once again, been placed on the Cardinals bullpen.

Kennedy has allowed three unearned runs or less in seven successive starts, but is 1-3 over that stretch. Third baseman Yangervis Solarte one-hopped a triple off the right-center field wall with one out.

“Just eliminate two people in the lineup, Lynn and Pham, ” Kennedy said.

“Offensively, they were putting me in the hitting groups, they were flipping (soft tosses) to me extra”.

Pham finally started playing June 6 in Memphis.

The Cardinals wrapped up a nine-game homestand with a 5-4 mark.

“You don’t like to lose, especially four straight, ” Lynn said.

In the eighth, with the game tied 1-1, Xavier Scruggs led off by being hit by a pitch.

San Diego has won 55% (21-17) of its games when leading after 7 innings. Matheny said Cooney, who got a no-decision Thursday against the Padres, and Tyler Lyons are candidates to pitch Tuesday when the Cardinals play a day-night doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

For the Padres offense, the last three games have been typically frustrating. The inning ended with a popout.
