Small Business Saturday Encourages Shopping Local

The day has grown into a well-known shopping day like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Strickland added, noting that retail economics studies show that local business generates 70% more local economic activity per square foot than big box retail.

Additionally, if locals are not shopping at these small stores, they aren’t likely to be there when those certain unique items are needed.

“Yes, we’re starting to see more traffic on the day after just the promotion of helping small businesses in the community”, said Jamie’s Secret Garden owner, Jamie Nold.

“One day a year when they are shopping small gets them thinking about other times they can stop in and visit places that are local to them”, Ben Ratner of Lib’s Cafe in Salem said. “Small businesses account for 75 percent of our membership, and they are job creators”, said Carlos Phillips, GLI’s senior vice president of operations.

Small Business Saturday was created in 2010 by American Express to encourage shoppers to support local businesses instead of national megastores.

Wherever people shop, the money they spend makes a difference to a number of people and businesses – the workers, the owners, the suppliers, etc.

The U.S.is home to more than 28 million small businesses.

In years past American Express cardholders were eligible for credits on their statements based on their spending on Small Business Saturday.

“Small Business Saturday” is here and many local shops are continuing their sales clear into the weekend.

The Black Friday bargains might be coming to a close but the holiday deals will still continue for small businesses.
