Vegas Play of the Day: Iowa at Nebraska

NU defeated #6 Michigan State earlier in November.

“We’re not going to quit”, Canzeri said, “no matter the circumstances that come our way”.

We’ve reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. But, with an increasing number of bowl games each year, there are more and more slots to plug with teams.

The teams then traded punts before the Huskers got the ball back at the Iowa 21 with 1:11 left on the clock in the first half.

Finally on Friday, a few Hawkeyes, led by their junior quarterback, said they’re fed up with the perception that Iowa has not achieved as much as other playoff contenders.

“We might do a throwback to the Rose Bowl or something like that, but we don’t do a Big Ten Championship shirt”, Ejiasi said.

Iowa couldn’t seem to shake Nebraska until the Hawkeyes discovered the nobody-touches-Jordan Canzeri plays.

Nebraska entered Memorial Stadium looking for its second win over a top-10 opponent in the past four weeks.

On offense, the coach hopes the Nebraska run game can generate some of the same consistency it had in the win against Michigan State against an Iowa defense that ranks No. 7 nationally in rushing defense.

This “spoiler” role is truly one the program has, even with some of the struggles of the last 15 years, rarely had the chance to play. I told them, our windows in the coaches’ office face the weight room, and you see guys in there at 7 o’clock, 6:30 in the morning, working their ass off. Everybody’s in it, everybody’s doing whatever they can to get everybody prepared.

Better to just practice your tail off and as Riley put it this week, “have some inherent pride in being a competitor”, than worry about labels.

They didn’t do a whole lot on offense against Nebraska, their defense gave up a lot of yards again and they muffed a punt.

“If you get too caught up in that other stuff, you lose focus on what you need to do on the field”. The Cougars are also well positioned to earn a bid to a New Year’s Six bowl game, likely the Fiesta Bowl, if they win the league championship.

“The players, I mean the players are a good group of dudes”. Jewell leads the team in tackles with 102 total tackles, and he has 6.5 tackles for loss this season. The Cornhuskers have won two straight including a big win over Michigan State, and they would like nothing more than to hand Iowa their first loss of the season. Iowa has three Nebraskans on its roster – linebacker Cole Fisher of Omaha and defensive linemen Drew Ott (injured) of Trumbull and Nathan Bazata of Howells.

Jones returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and Gardenhire scooped up a fumble and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. A victory over Iowa would make the ‘Huskers eligible for a bowl.

“If you watch our team and you like football and you like camaraderie and teamwork, that’s what I like watching”, Ferentz said.

Parker Hesse and Iowa made Tommy Armstrong pay for his mistakes Friday. “Right now we’re going to enjoy this one and find out our opponent on Sunday”.

Coming off a 31-14 win over Rutgers, Nebraska fell to 5-7 after today’s loss.

The coach didn’t skip a beat.

“You want to win every game – that’s your goal”, Ferentz said.
