Shopping local is more than a mantra

Past year an estimated $14.3 billion was spent at small, independent businesses on Small Business Saturday.

In contrast to the major discounts that are promised by the giant retailers, Small Business Saturday stands in contrast to that. With proclamations of support from governments in all 50 states, the day is expected to be a success for locally owned businesses across the nation.

Store owners and residents alike say shopping local keeps money local, and the cash goes right back into the area’s economy.

Froelich said she also enjoys downtown for its the friendly environment and the interaction between shop owners and customers.

Small Business Saturday was started by American Express, a BBB Accredited Business.

Amanda Hinojosa, a manager of the store told us that by shopping local, “what they spend is coming back to the community…and coming back to the neighborhood”.

With the bulk of Black Friday over, many Bozeman small businesses are looking forward to Small Business Saturday, a day to support local merchants and shops.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is most commonly referred to as small business Saturday, and local businesses are preparing for the day. “However, supporting our local businesses is so important”. Rob Vedro is a partner in the family-owned business, Blue Frog Books of Howell.

More than 30 downtown businesses have signed up for the Anchorage Downtown Partnership’s Shop Small campaign.

“Service is everything and I think that’s the big difference in a Mom and Pop”, said Stacey Watson, Master Jeweler at Bryson’s.

“A lot of the businesses band together and we kind of make sure the word gets out to everyone around town as much as possible”.
