Hot on the heels of Chan-hom, Typhoon Nangka was swelling over the Pacific Ocean Saturday and is expected to travel northwest towards Japan’s Ryukyu Islands in the coming days.

As of 5:00 a.m. Sunday, Chan-Hom was located at the northern area of the east China sea, packing winds of up to 35 meters per second, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC). Nangka was briefly categorized as a “super typhoon” with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour early Friday but weakened slightly Saturday, the Weather Channel said.
Heavy downpour was reported in some areas, including the village of Lai’ao, which recorded more than 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain, according to Xinhua.
Provincial authorities estimate economic losses from the storm could reach more than 1.9 billion yuan (£197million), particularly in the agricultural sector, Chinese state media reported.
Earlier in the week, it wreaked havoc in Taiwan and the Philippines.
Out at sea, Chan-hom was whipping up waves of up to 10m high, the US Government’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre said.
In neighboring Jiangsu Province, almost 80-thousand people have been evacuated and over 22,000 ships recalled to port. Many flights were canceled out of Nantong and Nanjing.
Transport networks were paralysed as hundreds of flights, ferry and rail journeys were cancelled – and motorists were warned not to drive.

Authorities say the powerful storm could turn out to be the strongest typhoon to hit Zhejiang province since 1949.
