Tyson Fury defeats Wladimir Klitschko

Tyson Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision to end the Ukrainian’s nine-and-a-half-year reign as heavyweight champion and take his WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles.

Klitschko finally found some success in the fourth but never went through the gears, being cut under the left eye after a clash of heads in the fifth.

It seemed like a long wait for Fury as the cards were sorted but it was worth it with judges Cesar Ramos and Ramon Cerdan scoring it 115-112 and judge Raul Caiz Sr wider still at 116-111 to set off jubilant scenes.

Tyson Fury is threatening to pull out of Saturday’s world heavyweight title fight against Wladimir Klitschko in Germany because the canvas in the ring is too soft, according to his agent.

Afterwards the new WBA, IBF and WBO champion told reporters: “I always said what I’d do and I’ve delivered tonight”. Wladimir caught Tyson with a blow to the chin with his right hand, while Tyson rocked Wladimir with a right hook that left the champ rocking on his legs.

Both men claimed victory but when the scores were announced, it was Fury whose hand was raised to signal a changing of the guard in the heavyweight division.

“I worked for six months for this in the gym, it’s a dream come true”, Fury said in a ringside interview after the fight. He represents one of the most interesting challengers to Klitschko’s throne in quite some time, if only for his large personality.

Suddenly the Fury camp’s last-gasp mind games, which included complaints about the canvas and an interjection over the wrapping of Klitschko’s gloves, appeared as though they may have been the result of fear and not self-belief. “All that verbal offense is the cover of the fear of the unknown, and for sure he has some loose screws as well”, Klitschko said. As for Fury (25-0, 18 KOs), who came in at 247 pounds, the second lightest he’s ever been for a fight in his career, he made it ugly, clinched often, and picked and poked at the lethargic future Hall of Famer over 12 rounds.

The pair were introduced by the sport’s most famous MC, Michael Buffer, and Fury entered the event, which was held in the head office of a sports company and was closed off to the public, to Just A Little Talk With Jesus. But then he had Klitschko in trouble in the corner.

Considering he’s pushing 40, Klitschko could be right in that his body might betray him and cause him to lose. The Fury camp’s celebrations seemed more honest.
