For this Small Business Saturday, one Hamilton County community is stepping up to help its owners and give shoppers a chance to win prizes.
“We’ve noticed in the last three years the shop local movement has been great”.
According to the Governor’s office, there are more than 670,00 small businesses across Virginia.
Some sellers say they have a hard time filling out their profiles, but it clearly can be a big selling point to reach shoppers who want to feel a connection to the artisan or dealer with whom they’re interacting.
“This is kind of that first weekend to kick off the next several weeks of holiday, and fun, and cheer, and camaraderie. They care about making sure that the money that they spend supports somebody that they know or have some relationship with”, said Derrière de Soie manager Megan Giltner.
You might pay a little more than you would at a big-box retailer, but you’re getting something more unique.
“For us it’s not so much Black Friday, it’s more about Small Business Saturday”.
Not only are independently owned shops in downtowns across the state offering special deals and savings, but they are raising money for good causes.
By shopping local you’re more than tripling your contribution and participation in Austin’s economy.
They are offering bargains you won’t just find in a couple stores, but throughout Fishers.
“We’ve seen a serious increase in our business specifically on Small Business Saturday”. Wells said the goal is to transition artists from this shop to downtown storefronts.
“It is a campaign put on by American Express”.

American Express started the locally-focused holiday shopping season kickoff in 2010, and Delaware’s deputy Small Business Administration director John Banks says it’s grown every year.
