Local businesses look for support on Small Business Saturday

“This year, Amex is not offering a statement credit offer for card members on Small Business Saturday, but is increasing the support and resources it provides to help small business owners market their business within their communities”.

“I don’t know that they’re not thinking about small businesses, but of course when you see the big commercials, millions of dollars are spent in advertising Black Friday”, Ganache Owner Amber Schacter said.

As some small businesses are struggling across the nation today is a day some local store owners say is a chance for them to shine.

Peggy Calhoun has been a local business owner for 18 years. Now W.O.W. Meow Inc. sells books and artwork to the community. “So that’s why they deserve our support and our loyalty”, U.S. Small Business Administration Director Tom Todt said. The store has given away 2,000 books since August.

Mayo Plaza Property Manager, Mark McKenzie says keeping money local is key for the community.

Small Business Saturday, also known as “Shop Small” Saturday, is a part of a national movement that started back in 2010 to encourage people to support small, local businesses.

By shopping local you’re more than tripling your contribution and participation in Austin’s economy. She believes shopping local gives you a more personal experience. “We don’t have a location anywhere else so this is unique to Chattanooga so I think it adds character”. As Mayor Heuther says, small businesses are the foundation of the retail and economy of South Dakota.

“What I did when I was a kid for fun, my favorite game was playing shop”, Bass said.

“What we find about the customers are they’re very honest”, said Sylvi Caporale, owner of American Flags and Poles.
