Islanders 3, Lightning 2

Well, it seems the Tampa Bay Lightning will have to return home and hopefully respond better than they played against the Washington Capitals. “It’s kind of a wasted opportunity, so it’s really disappointing”. The Lightning lost to the Capitals by 4-2 due to their penalty kill giving up three goals.

Tampa Bay Lightning center Alex Killorn, left, celebrates his goal against the New York Islanders with teammate center Steven Stamkos, right, during the first period of an NHL hockey game Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, in Tampa, Fla.

It could’ve been worse after Washington registered 18 shots before the first intermission, its most in a period this season.

Evgeny Kuznetsov had two assists, marking his seventh multi-assist game of the season and the 10th of his career.

Anton Stralman built on that lead as he came around the back of the net and took a behind-the-back pass from Stamkos for an easy conversion at 1:39 of the second.

It was only the second time all season the Islanders had two power-play goals, the other coming on October 12 against the Jets.

“Credit the Islanders, they hung in there”, Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 33 saves for the Lightning.

Less than a minute later, Lightning center Valtteri Filppula had a breakaway, but he was denied by Greiss.

Cedric Paquette (undisclosed) won’t play Saturday against the Islanders, Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune reports.

It’s not a bad total, and if the postseason started today they’d lose out only because of a tiebreaker to the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Islanders. They are plus-11 in third periods this season, outscoring their opponents 31-20. Tampa Bay is 2-17-2 in its past 21 games in Washington. 4, N.Y. Islanders, Clutterbuck 5, 16:51.

As Chimera’s goal was being announced on the Verizon Center video board, Marcus Johansson interrupted it with a goal of his own, giving the Capitals a 3-0 lead after two periods that was too much for the reigning Eastern Conference champions to overcome in the third period.

Byfuglien made it 2-0 early in the third when his odd-angle shot hit Dubnyk in the back of the skate and went in for his seventh goal.

The rookie didn’t get rattled, however, stopping a big shot from Jason Pominville with 3:11 to play. Shots on Goal-N.Y. Islanders 6-7-9-22.
