Shopping local on Small Business Saturday

Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender proclaimed Saturday as Small Business Saturday to join the nationwide effort to steer shoppers toward locally owned businesses this holiday season.
Carol Carrier is supporting Small Business Saturday by shopping at Caleena and Co.
“Just on this street alone I have a former student who owns a business, Kelly Jay’s cafe”, said Randi Mochamer.
The survey said a record 55 percent of US consumers are aware of Small Business Saturday, while 83 percent say Small Business Saturday makes them want to shop local and shop small all year long. “If you come into the store you are going to be able to find that ideal gift for your mother, brother, really anybody”, said Kaitlin.
Loudon Merchants and Property Owners Association Executive Director Patti Wells said the town is participating heavily in “Small Business Saturday”.
“People who shop the big stores come out and say, ‘You know what?”
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake did some shopping Saturday at the Waverly Market, where there was a pop-up holiday market. He said it has brought them a lot of attention.
Small Business Saturday has grown into a major economic boom for independent businesses in downtown Lafayette and the country.
Shoppers enjoy shopping small because it helps local owners.
Strause sells the work of local artists in her gallery, which she opened three years ago.
“When you buy local, that money, most of that money, stays within the community, and so you’re really helping your local economy”, said Vicki Bahr, co-owner of Kitsch in Norfolk.
