Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t always play good football at Manchester United, says

Rio Ferdinand says Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin “pose zero threat” in terms of their attacking output at Manchester United.

Another lifeless United match ended goalless at home to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday but a point inches the club closer to knock-out stages of the tournament.

But Ferdinand has revealed that Ferguson and Van Gaal aren’t that different – they both win at any cost – and it doesn’t matter if the football is boring.

Ferdinand believes Van Gaal has merely implemented the tactics that have served him so well throughout his career, and insists the Dutchman can be pleased with how he has improved United overall. Up until now it looked as though City would be able to convince Guardiola to join them once he’d finished at Bayern Munich but according to the Mail – it now seems as though he could be heading for Old Trafford rather than the Etihad.

He added: “Certainly during the final three seasons under Sir Alex it was more a case of us getting over the line than anything cavalier”.

And Ferdinand claims fans of the Old Trafford club should be happy with the way the club is performing.

Germany’s Schweinsteiger and France’s Schneiderlin are essentially the poster boys for Van Gaal’s style as they have combined for one goal and zero assists in 24 appearances between them this season.

“However, there was certainly a lot more ambition and threat in our play than there is now with United”.

“In many ways, why should there be, given where he has taken the club in 18 months?” It is not a game in the best traditions of Old Trafford. Instead, he was someone who would stabilise the situation and put the club in with a chance of winning trophies again.

Ferdinand also admitted United were not always an exciting team under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
