Serie A roundup: AC Milan up to fifth with Sampdoria win

M’Baye Niang was “delighted” to score his first Serie A goals for AC Milan in the 4-1 thrashing of Sampdoria on Saturday, with the French forward also adding an assist in the rout. Luiz Adriano bagged Milan’s fourth with a goal in the 79th minute.

And after the whistle Mihajlovic said he foresaw good things on the horizon for Milan, who moved up to fifth place.

The win saw Milan close to seven points behind leaders and city rivals Inter in the Serie A standings while Vincenzo Montella’s Sampdoria were left in 12th place.

“He’s a big player for us, he was doing really well in pre-season then he got injured”.

Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side settled quickly and took the lead in the 16th minute when Bonaventura finished a thrilling move after being played in by Niang.

“I am very happy, as I’d been waiting a long time for a night like this”, Niang told Mediaset Premium.

Seconds earlier, Niang almost scored with an acrobatic airborne backheel deflection following a free kick from Alessio Cerci.

“With two wide men and two forwards we were more compact, but it was the hard work from everyone, and in particular the wide men, that made a difference”.

Sampdoria were struggling to find any rhythm and Milan’s movement in the final third of the pitch was causing huge problems for the visitors.

But when the ‘keeper fluffed a clearance, Niang collected and strode confidently into the area to fire under his body and secure the second brace of his Serie A career, after hitting a double for Genoa against Verona last season.
