Vardy breaks Premier League record

In a 1-1 draw between Leicester City and Manchester United, the striker broke the Premier League record by scoring in his 11th consecutive appearance.

Claudio Ranieri led the tributes to Premier League record-breaking forward Jamie Vardy but the Leicester manager is still only interested in ensuring his team remains clear of relegation.

With United coming into this game having clocked eight plus hours since conceding a league goal from open play, Louis Van Gaal opted for his traditional wing-back system – more associated with last season’s side – to counter The Foxes’ counter-attacking pace. “If we can break from a corner to get a goal it’s going to benefit the team”.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Vardy said he was “delighted to have got the goal” if frustrated with the final result.

“I had to close the channels for Vardy and Okazaki, and that was always a reason, and we also had one man more in midfield so we had a lot of space and, because of that, we dominated the game”.

“I’ve just been keeping my head down this week, not letting it sink in my head and just concentrate”, Vardy said.

On the stroke of half-time, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s first goal for United cancelled out Vardy’s 40th in Leicester colours to temper the party atmosphere and a cagey second half threw up few clear-cut chances.

Jamie Vardy celebrates his historic goal.

It was the 11th straight game in which Vardy has scored – a new Premier League best – and the first time a player has achieved that mark in the top division since Blackpool’s Stan Mortensen 65 years ago.

“Well done vardy7! You’re number one now and you deserved it. #11inarow”, the former United striker tweeted.

Let’s see if Vardy can continue this incredible run when Leicester face Swansea City next Saturday, but all that matters right now is that he holds the record in the PL and has come from absolutely nowhere to do something no other player has done in PL history.

After 14 minutes, his determination allowed him to dispossess Michael Carrick and set up N’Golo Kante for a shot which was deflected behind the United goal.

The Dutchman won league titles in England, Spain and the Netherlands, while Vardy’s biggest achievement to date is helping Leicester get promoted to the Premier League in 2014. That’s why I wanted to change one of the strikers, but then Rooney was injured’.

Bottom club Aston Villa’s misery continued as they lost 3-2 at home to Watford.
