Coli spurs Taylor Farms celery recall

The FDA urged for the recall of all other products containing celery from Taylor Farms out of “an abundance of caution”.

The list of products being recalled tops 70 products and includes the Fresh To Go Bistro Snack that’s sold in 7/11 stores and several onion and celery blends sold at Costco and Nob Hill stores.

Tauxe says the CDC has already identified a DNA fingerprint of the E. coli strain that connects all 19 ill people. “We are working with the CDC and state partners to determine the source”.

If you have Costco chicken salad in your fridge, you may want to check the container. So far, five people have been hospitalized and two developed kidney failure. By state, the case count is as follows: California (1), Colorado (4), Missouri (1), Montana (6), Utah (5), Virginia (1), and Washington (1).

Escherichia coli 0157:H7 is bacterium that causes a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. “Yeah, they need to keep a good eye on this kind of stuff because this is serious stuff”, Fred Coleman, a Costco shopper. Most people will recover within a week, but in some the illness can progress to kidney failure. Tauxe also emphasized that at present the CDC did not have any evidence to show any contamination in any of the other Costco foods.

In the last few weeks, 19 people in seven states have gotten sick.

Chipotle made a decision to voluntarily close 43 of its restaurants in OR and Washington after the outbreak.

“I think we’re going to learn something important from both ultimately”, he said. The incubation period is three to seven days from the time of exposure.

Health investigators said that the people who bought the chicken salad purchased it in late October or early November.
