It was a big night for British boyband One Direction at the American Music Awards on Sunday evening. She won song of the year for “Blank Space“, favorite album – pop/rock for “1989” and favorite artist – adult contemporary. Luke Bryan, who performed Home Alone Tonight was named Favorite Country Male Artist while Carrie Underwood was the Favorite Country Female artist.

The recent Paris attacks were mentioned as Celine Dion gave a powerful performance of Edith Piaf’s ‘Hymne A L’amour?’, dedicating the performance to the victims who lost their lives on November 13.

Nicki Minaj won two rap awards and thanked her fans for letting her change every time she comes out with something. It beat out One Direction’s Made in the A.M. “France matters, Russian Federation matters, Syria matters, Mali matters, the Middle East matters, the United States matters, the entire world matters and peace is possible”. From the dresses to the drama and the jaw-dropping moments, here’s everything you need to know about The American Music Awards 2015.

The show began promisingly, with Jennifer Lopez doing several bars of her tune “Waiting for Tonight“, afterward quitting the music to pronounce having a not-quite-straight face, “Tonight’s not about me”. Justin Bieber, who closed the show, effectively literalized the cleansing he’s been after following several years of tabloid troubles with a performance of “Sorry” that had him drenched in a simulated downpour.

Other big winners included the Weeknd, who won two awards: favourite male artist and album (soul/R&B).

Scarborough’s very own, The Weeknd, a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye, went home with two awards, one presented by none other than Prince, for favourite R&B album for Beauty Behind the Madness.

Nick Minaj had some words of wisdom when she took the stage to accept Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album for “Pinkprint”: “Please find your voice and find your goal before it’s too late”.

Another notable moment came from Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth, who excited the crowd when they shared a passionate kiss at the end of their duet on his hit Marvin Gaye. J. Lo then showed off her dance skills with a routine that features some of the year’s most popular songs, including tracks by Rihanna, Drake and Taylor Swift. “She goes, ‘Ariana, I went on the computer, I voted, so I think you’ll win, ‘” Grande said in an Italian accent.
