Colorado State 90, Portland 74

The CSU men’s basketball team held a 17-point halftime lead Saturday night, but stumbled to a 99-90 double-overtime loss to UTEP in the championship game of the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic. Hooper Vint led the Miners offense with 18 points and nine rebounds with Terry Winn adding 15 points and ten boards.

Clavell scored 35 points for the Rams (5-1).

UTEP finally tied it at 66 on a free throw by Moore at the 3:35 mark.

A layup by Clavell in the first overtime tied the score and sent the game into a second overtime.UTEP never trailed in the second overtime. The Miners scored the first four points on layups by Vint and Morris.

Trailing by three with a minute remaining in regulation, UTEP was looking for a final possession when the ball went out of bounds after an errant Rams shot clock-beating attempt. The Rams dominated the glass 73-47, but had 21 turnovers to just eight for the Miners. Junior Emmanuel Omogbo had a double-double with 15 points and a team season-best and career-high 20 rebounds. Our leadership failed us miserably and we just have to get better’.

Portland canned 10 of 19 from behind the arc and shot 51.9 percent from the field for the game (27 of 52). CSU limited the Pilots to less then 36% from the field and 12-40 on threes while burning the nets at 53% including 10-17 from distance. “Those two freshmen were outstanding, and Christian Romine for a couple of minutes”.

The Miners passed the first leg of a demanding six-game stretch that features upcoming games against I-10 rival NM State (twice), Washington State on the road and UT Arlington at home.

Floyd was asked what he learned about his team in come-from-behind victories over Southern Illinois and Colorado State. SIU’s largest lead was five points in the first half, and UTEP’s largest was nine points midway through the second half.
