Store owners prepare for Small Business Saturday

Local shops wooed thousands of customers to forgo the big-box stores and shop local.

Allen Kraus has been running his suit shop in downtown Freeport for 25 years and says business in the Pretzel City hasn’t always been booming.

Amanda Hinojosa, a manager of the store told us that by shopping local, “what they spend is coming back to the community…and coming back to the neighborhood”.

American Express Credit Card Company launched the Small Business Saturday initiative.

Shops in Louisville on Main Street unite to help each other promote Shop Small Saturday, says store owner, Speedy Calvert.

“It’s important to remember that we are all in it together and that’s why shopping local is so important”, Franks said. “It’s fun to come into these unique shops”.

“I just gives an opportunity for more businesses to come here if we support locally”, Dowson said.

Many people hit the stores for Black Friday, and Saturday, local businesses hoped shoppers would be out again in support of Small Business Saturday. Sales this year could exceed $14 billion, and data show consumers are willing to paying slightly more to support an independent business. Business owners tell us supporting local is all about supporting your community.

Eaton says keeping small businesses thriving is a group effort. Poor said her favorite thing about her shop is the unique items she can bring to those who visit.
